Women Against Registry
Announcing Women Against Registry
by RSOL Director Paul Shannon, at the 3rd Annual National Conference, August 12-14, 2011
This year’s conference focus is on developing and empowering our leaders. It has become increasingly clear that if we are ever to turn our many voices into one strong national movement, we must all pull together under a shared vision. We are excited to present a bold national initiative that we hope will serve as a unifying force for the efforts of RSOL and all other groups working to reverse the negative impact of sex offender legislation on American society.
Child welfare advocates, many of them women, often promote and support draconian sex offender legislation claiming that they are protecting women and children. Our challenge is to directly challenge these advocates by showing that it is their irrational laws which are causing serious harm not only to the family members and friends of former sex offenders, but to society as a whole. What more effective way to meet this challenge than through a powerful block of other women speaking to the terrible harm that present sex offender legislation is causing women and children across the country.
It is time for us to take full advantage of our greatest strength: A large number of activists in support of our cause are also determined women who are enraged by the injustice caused by these laws. History has shown when a society lists and categorizes entire classes of people, the result is hate-based laws that marginalize people, violate their constitutional, civil and human rights, and tear at the very fabric of civilized society. These laws can cause the destruction of the family unit, instill fear and paranoia in local neighborhoods, affect property values, and have a negative impact on society as a whole. By creating a highly-visible mobilization of mothers, wives, girlfriends, grandmothers, female friends and children, we intend to confront those who promote this hysteria, and break the stranglehold they currently have on the national debate.
